Biden needs Trade Promotion Authority; Republicans should grant it
WITH Trade Promotion Authority (TPA), the US Congress can grant the president of the United States a “fast track” for negotiating trade agreements. In the US system, the president negotiates trade deals, but Congress must approve them. Without TPA in place, the president, and any countries he is negotiating with, have little confidence that any trade pact they reach would even be considered by Congress.
With Republicans gaining a majority in the House of Representatives, now is the time to pass TPA.
Since 1979, 14 free trade pacts have come into force under TPA, including the US-Singapore free trade agreement. Without TPA, only one.
