IMAGINE a racehorse which once led the field among Asian runners but which has since slowed with age to the point where it seems that no end of whipping, spurring or even injecting with steroids can bring the animal back to anything like its previous form. It is like "flogging a dead horse".

The demanding riders of this thoroughbred, who it seems cannot bear the thought of others taking the lead, are opting to go even harder on the animal - whips, spurs, steroids and all. They appear unwilling to accept what others say is reality and let the beast amble along at its own pace.
