‘Beginning of the end’ for Boris Johnson
The UK PM prevailed in a narrow “technical” sense in his party’s no-confidence vote on Monday, but lost politically in not winning enough to end the leadership questions that have long dogged him.
MONDAY night witnessed the beginning of the end of Boris Johnson’s UK prime ministership, despite him winning a confidence ballot in his leadership amongst Conservative MPs.
Johnson prevailed in a narrow “technical sense” in getting 211 votes, over the 180 votes threshold needed to win. However, he lost in a wider and more important “political sense” in that he did not win by enough to end the leadership questions that have long dogged him.
A larger than expected 148 MPs (ie 41 per cent of Conservative MPs) voted against him. This is a worse result than Theresa May suffered in her 2018 confidence vote, and she resigned within six months.
