    I HAVE not sensed this level of political hysteria gripping Washington, DC, since candidate Donald Trump started winning presidential primaries in early 2016.

    Then it was the members of the Republican Party's establishment who were in panic, as a New York real estate tycoon calling Mexican immigrants "rapists" and blasting the "elites", a nativist and protectionist demagogue, seemed to be gaining the political momentum in the race for the Republican presidential nomination, leaving behind the party's favourite son, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, who should have been the front-runner at that stage.
