Bonn summit’s battle against climate change post-Ukraine
The UN will once again make clear that only urgent political and economic action can avoid worsening risks of future drought, extreme heat, and floods across the globe.
AS FINAL preparations are made for World Environment Day on Sunday (June 5), the earth is facing a triple emergency.
Firstly, pollution poisons much of our air, land and water; at the same time habitat loss and other related pressures mean an estimated 1 million species are threatened with extinction.
Yet, important as these twin challenges are, perhaps the biggest single environmental problem is global warming as the climate is heating up too quickly for people and nature to adapt. It is that climate challenge that will be the focus of the United Nations’ Bonn climate conference, which starts Monday (June 6) to coincide with World Environment Day, after preparatory meetings since May 31, some half a year after the Glasgow COP 26.
