Breaking up tech giants won't solve the problem of market dominance

POLITICAL leaders in the United States are increasingly toying with the idea of breaking up Big Tech as a response to suspicions about the market dominance of a handful of tech giants.

But breaking up those companies is unlikely to solve the problem, and it might lead to unwanted consequences for consumers. There are better ways to open up the playing field for others.

There is now a bipartisan push in America to look into breaking up the likes of Alphabet, Amazon and Facebook, with the Trump administration's Justice Department looking into the subject and Democratic presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren making it a key pillar of her platform.
