Can Ron DeSantis save the GOP?

The Florida governor, who has become a political star for his competent handling of the pandemic, seems to be the best man for the job.

    YES, the Democrats have won back the White House and are again setting the legislative and policy agenda. Under President Joe Biden, they are promoting an ambitious socio-economic programme, which enjoys public support, and leading the way for the country to beat Covid-19 and revive the economy.

    These should therefore be happy days for the Democrats, while the Republicans are expected to continue mourning their losses and licking their wounds. Right?

    But things aren't always the way they look in politics - and in Washington politics, in particular. One can make the argument that if you are a Republican, you should actually be looking now with some sense of optimism to the 2022 mid-term elections and perhaps even beyond, to the 2024 presidential race.
