Cleaning up Asia's polluted air

With sufficient resources and nationwide policy coordination, China has the opportunity to set an example for the region.

    AS THE lure of economic opportunity and modern lifestyles draw people into cities, the long-running trend of global urbanisation continues unabated.

    And with the passing of yet another World Environment Day on June 5, it's noteworthy that urban air pollution is still primarily an Asian problem, and the challenges are regionally widespread.

    The systems to support the behaviour and consumption patterns of today's urban dwellers are strained by overburdened infrastructure and fiscal limitations. Effects are as measurable as they are visible: traffic congestion, degraded waterways, and - most of all - air pollution.
