THERE is one way of analysing politics, the way political scientists do it by studying demographic changes, economic indicators or results of opinion polls, which could provide you with a picture of the main trends that would determine the winners and losers of the next election.

But as reporters recognise, behind the numbers we discover real human beings - the political animals who are driven by a hunger and struggle for power, and, in many cases, by basic instincts such as jealousy, hatred and lust. Their stories tell us sometimes more about the forces that shape politics than the intricate statistics. And these stories are probably more interesting than the latest polls.

The recent scandal that is expected to end the political career of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is igniting so much public attention because it involves accusations of sexual harassment against a leading Democratic politician, although that is only one of the main reasons for the media's preoccupation with the story.
