India, China need dose of cricket spirit, not hostile takeovers

THE coronavirus pandemic is impacting the India-China bilateral economic relationship, and both sides need to adopt a spirit of sportsmanship. They should get inspired by their existing collaboration on the cricket field where Chinese companies are investing millions of dollars in sponsoring Indian cricket tournaments and teams.

They should remember that cricket - and good bilateral relations - is all about fair play.

The latest issue that may affect their bilateral ties is the Indian government's curbs against "opportunistic" investors from neighbouring countries, principally China. The restrictions aim to prevent Chinese companies from buying up Indian listed companies whose valuations have plunged sharply, making them cheap takeover targets.
