DICTATORSHIPS are good for infrastructure, it seems, whereas democracies are bad. Whether this is because autocrats feel happy making grand gestures with other people's money while democrats feel they have to account for every penny spent is a moot point. But the fact is undeniable.
Donald Trump is about to illustrate this point once again as he prepares to launch a major spending programme to tackle the very down-at-heel (and in some cases downright dangerous) state of roads, bridges, tunnels and what have you in the world's biggest economy.
