Italian election may send economic shockwaves through the eurozone
WITH the European landscape already in flux, Italy is preparing for an unexpected general election in September that might not only send shockwaves across the eurozone, but also result in the nation’s first far-right-led Government since the Second World War.
The ballot was precipitated by the same conservative forces which polls indicate are now likely to win power. The organisation heading up opinion surveys is the Brothers of Italy, one of the few parties not to participate in the government of Prime Minister Mario Draghi.
That far-right, Eurosceptic organisation has been riding a wave of increasing popularity and is now polling at over 20 per cent. Its leader, Giorgia Meloni, hopes to become Italy's first woman prime minister, leading a coalition of conservative forces, including The League party.
