It's the big Republican show

But Mr Trump's adversaries could show up in force at the convention and perhaps transform it into a media event

IT'S the start of the summer season in Washington, DC. That usually means that not a lot of exciting things tend to happen here as government officials, lawmakers, lobbyists and the journalists who cover them take time off. And since this is a Company Town - the company being the government - that also means that the city starts to feel empty.

But not Summer 2016! It's not only that news from around the world keeps intruding 24/7, like the horrifying terrorist attack in Nice, France, or the failed military coup in Turkey, and forcing President Barack Obama to respond in real time.

More significantly, a brutal US presidential campaign involving two global celebrities is underway. It has become the world's biggest news story and the political players in Washington - starting with the president, his aides and ending with congressional interns, not to mention the long list of politicos who have signed up to work for one or the other of the two candidates - recognise that the outcome of this presidential race could prove to be historic. And they are hoping to affect it in one way or another.
