KL moves timely reminder of the importance of food security for Singapore
MALAYSIA'S upcoming ban on fish and shrimp exports and its potential curb on egg exports are timely reminders of the importance of food security, even as Singapore's efforts in this area intensify.
Earlier this month, a fall in supply boosted egg prices in Malaysia, prompting the authorities to suggest that they might limit or stop the export of eggs to protect domestic consumers.
In response to the news, the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) noted that there were plans to acquire eggs from elsewhere if need be. Yet a switch in supply would likely mean higher prices. About 73 per cent of Singapore's eggs come from Malaysia, with another quarter produced locally and less than 1 per cent imported from accredited farms in Thailand, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand.
