Korea hangs over Tillerson's tricky Asean trip

Published Mon, Aug 7, 2017 · 09:50 PM

REX Tillerson is in the midst of his latest tricky diplomatic trip, this time to South-east Asia, his first tour to the region as US secretary of state. With stop-offs in the Philippines, Thailand and Malaysia, he is seeking to dispel perceptions that the Donald Trump team has little interest in the strategically important area which - if massed collectively - has the sixth largest economy in the world.

The tour has several landmarks, including on Tuesday with Mr Tillerson becoming the first US secretary of state to visit Bangkok since the 2014 military coup.

Moreover, on Wednesday he helps celebrate the 60th anniversary of bilateral relations between Kuala Lumpur and Washington.
