Less room for Muslims and refugees in Trump's America

1 What do you think was the most remarkable thing that happened this week?

At the base of the Statue of Liberty in New York is an engraving that greeted many of the immigrants into the United States in the early 20th century. That engraving contains a poem and an exhortation to "give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free".

US President Donald Trump has replaced that carefully cultivated image of America as the "Land of the Free" with the "Land of the Free if you're not Muslim". An executive order issued during the Lunar New Year weekend imposed an entry ban on citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries, a temporary halt to the US refugee admissions process and gave priority to refugee claims of religious persecution for applicants who are religious minorities in their original countries (which would prioritise Christians from Middle East countries).
