A limping WTO affects small countries like Singapore
Without a functioning global trade body, small countries would be left at the mercy of major powers.
FOR most of the world, the name Shree Baboo Chekitan Servansing is foreign sounding, bears little recognition and means even less. But as we count down to the end of September this year, it would be useful to take notice of it.
He is a lifelong civil servant of Mauritius, and over the last four years has also served as a member of the World Trade Organization's (WTO's) Appellate Body, a seven-member independent court that makes the final decision on global trade disputes.
By the end of this month, his term ends. The United States is blocking his reappointment. It is not personal. Washington has recently blocked the re-appointment of others as well.
