YOUNG INDIANS are still waiting for the bonanza of jobs promised by Narendra Modi when he was campaigning for the position of prime minister in 2013. Mr Modi had declared that if his government came to power, it would create 100 million jobs by 2022.

The promise has remained unfulfilled as only about 823,000 jobs had been created in India up till October 2017, according to the International Labour Organization (ILO), and most of them are classified as "vulnerable employment" because they are not regular, full-time jobs.

The ILO has recently made the forecast that of the 1.4 billion people estimated to be engaged in vulnerable employment worldwide this year, as many as 394 million (or more than a quarter) will be in India alone. An alarming 77 per cent of jobs in India would remain vulnerable.
