MORE than one year after the introduction of the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the effects of the regulation are rippling through the Asia Pacific, and indeed the world.

In January 2019, Google became the first Silicon Valley company to be hit by a major fine for non-compliance with the GDPR, with French regulators imposing a penalty of 50 million euros (S$77 million) on the giant.
