The world heaved a sigh of relief when it emerged that centrist, pro-European Union Emmanuel Macron made it to the second round of the French presidential elections.

Monsieur Macron's path to the second round, to be held on May 7, was not always assured. Far-left candidate Jean-Luc Melanchon had a strong run in the lead-up to April 23's preliminary round. With populist Marine Le Pen having led the polls in the weeks before, many feared that Mr Macron would fall out of the race.
