IT was not a political secret that on the eve of Tuesday's US presidential debate, supporters and aides to the Democratic candidate Joe Biden were worried, very worried, that the former vice-president would not be able to hold his own against Republican President Donald Trump during the 90-minute-long face-off.
Let's face it: The 77-year-old Mr Biden looks his age, does not exude a lot of energy, and is prone to embarrassing gaffes.
And after spending more than 40 years in Washington, DC, it is difficult to imagine him coming up with new ideas to help rally behind him a nation in the midst of a deadly epidemic and a costly economic recession.
