INDIA has welcomed the initiative to create the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, or Quad, but it needs to tread carefully, as it may end up making large military commitments without getting much in return.

After a meeting of diplomats from the Quad - the United States, Japan, India and Australia - last November, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs declared that its cooperation was based on its "converging vision and values for promotion of peace, stability and prosperity in an increasingly inter-connected region".

Without naming China at the time, it agreed that a free, open, prosperous and inclusive Indo-Pacific region would serve the long-term interests of all the countries in the region and of the world at large.
