Responsible data use will pay off in the long term

FROM health care to public security to a nationwide cashless system, all sorts of personal data are being aggregated in Singapore as it works to fulfil its vision of becoming a "Smart Nation", embracing the adoption of digital and smart technologies.

While these digital enhancements offer apparent benefits, the journey is not without challenges as concerns over data privacy - and security - become prevalent.

Singapore's national database of medical records for example, called the National Electronic Health Record (NEHR), can provide critical information for improved patient care. Patients' health records can be seamlessly transmitted across healthcare institutions, helping to paint a more complete picture of the patient's health to the treating doctor and potentially saving lives during emergencies.
