THE Toshiba fiasco that culminated in the resignation of chairman Shigenori Shiga last week after the firm reported a massive writedown on its nuclear power operation is not new. It had been rumbling on for two years, but corporate Japan's power to shock and dismay markets never seems to end.

What is even more shocking than a globally known brand finding itself on the brink of being reduced to a hollow shell company is the fact that so many others in Japan have faced such ignominious fates.
