Singapore fends off ransomware, but needs to be ready for APTs

THE WannaCry ransomware attack has already garnered the dubious distinction of being the "worst digital disaster" to strike the Internet in years.

Despite this, the creators of this ransomware, who used a leaked US National Security Agency (NSA) Windows hacking technique, have till now earned a surprisingly modest amount of money - US$57,000 as of last count. Initial estimates had reckoned that the hacker group could earn up to US$1 billion.

As cybersecurity experts continued to analyse the hackers' trail they found that a lot of surprisingly crude mistakes were made, such as including a web-activated "kill switch", within the WannaCry code.
