ANY reader who is at least 30 years old can probably recall the global hysteria over the Y2K problem, aka Millennium Bug, when we were warned on the eve of 2000 that planes were going to crash in the sky, nuclear missiles would be launched, not to mention that the money in your bank account would vanish into thin air. We were on the eve of destruction!

The reason for that panic on the eve of the new millennium were the fears expressed by many scientists: Because many computer programs represented four-digit years with only the last two digits, the year 2000 would be indistinguishable from 1900, causing many errors that could impact real-time events.

Well, Jan 1, 2000, came and went, and the world did not come to an end. Most personal computer hardware and software were unaffected by the so-called Year 2000 Problem, as most of the worries proved to be nothing more than popular hysteria fanned by the media.
