The time hasn't come for Beto and Mayor Pete

Beto O'Rourke and Mayor Pete Buttigieg have thrilled the media, but it is appropriate now to cool things a bit, and keep it casual. The US isn't ready for either of them

FOR several weeks since March 13 when he officially announced that he would be seeking the Democratic nomination for President of the United States in 2020, Representative Robert Francis (also known as Beto) O'Rourke of Texas has become the matinee idol of the American media.

There was no doubt Beto had it: Name recognition. A young and fresh political face. So, so cool with a touch of "woke". A lot of new ideas. Progressive, but striving for bi-partisanship, who happens to be fluent in Spanish and has a great fund-raising operation.

He is that exciting candidate who is reminding so many journalists of the time they had fallen in love with another upbeat, youthful Democratic presidential candidate, Barack Obama.
