    Let us start with two assumptions: First, that Americans (with the possible exception of sociopaths) want to ensure that their fellow citizens stay healthy, and certainly would not want them to succumb to life-threatening diseases.

    That predilection is not driven only by altruism but by self-interest: If the person standing next to you in a subway train or your kid's teacher is infected with a deadly flu virus, that poses a direct threat to you.

    Secondly, we all prefer to live in a country that is economically growing and prospering, where businesses are booming and everyone is gainfully employed.
