1. What do you think was the most remarkable thing that happened this week?

For the umpteenth time this year, the news of the week has been dominated by the antics of US President Donald Trump. It began with his appearance at the G-7 Summit in Italy and then at NATO HQ, where he apparently riled some of America's long-standing European allies. Taking aim at Germany in particular, he later tweeted his grievances in a typically impolitic outburst: "We have a MASSIVE trade deficit with Germany, plus they pay FAR LESS than they should on NATO & military. Very bad for U.S.''

In response, German Chancellor Angela Merkel declared that the times when Europe could fully rely on others (meaning, obviously, the United States) were "over to a certain extent" and "we Europeans must really take our fate into our own hands".
