What national unity might mean
IN THIS year’s National Day Message, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong stressed how unity is crucial as Singapore moves beyond Covid-19. But unity in the face of a specific enemy, such as a virus, is fairly straightforward. It is less obvious what might be required for less clear-cut threats.
During the height of the pandemic, it was easy to understand what national unity should involve. Unlike some countries where an emphasis on individual choice fuelled resistance to pandemic measures such as mask mandates and vaccination, Singapore saw widespread compliance with Covid-19 curbs and high vaccination rates.
Above all, added PM Lee, “Singaporeans trusted one another” – practising personal and social responsibility, and supporting and taking care of fellow citizens.
