White nationalists face an inconvenient truth
The changing demographic reality of this Republican state - Hispanics replacing whites as the largest ethnic group - may see it become a Democratic stronghold in less than a decade
According to news reports, the suspected gunman who shot and killed at least 22 people and wounded 24 others in an El Paso, Texas, Walmart store on Saturday, identified as 21-year-old Patrick Crusius, has apparently authored a four-page document espousing racist and anti-immigrant views that reflected the agenda of the white nationalist movement.
One of the ideas advanced by the white nationalists, the so-called "Replacement Theory" which Mr Crusius embraced, suggests that America's liberal and secular elites are importing immigrants as part of a plan to "replace" white middle-class Americans who (unlike the "globalists" in New York and Washington, DC) were supposedly patriots devoted to their Christian religion.
Indeed, the manifesto Mr Crusius posted online - titled "The Inconvenient Truth" - was filled with white supremacist language and racist hatred aimed at immigrants and Latinos, stating that the author was opposed to "race mixing" and encouraged immigrants to return to their home countries. His central goal, the author said, was to stop a "Hispanic invasion of Texas".
