FROM the Tiananmen Square protests to today's unfolding Brexit process, outgoing British High Commissioner Scott Wightman's career has borne witness to historic moments - something he had broadly hoped for as a young man joining the diplomatic service in 1983.

"I didn't have a clearly plotted-out path for myself when I joined," he recalls, looking back from the vantage point of a sofa in Eden House, his official residence in Singapore. "I was interested in having an opportunity to work in embassies overseas and have the opportunity to be involved in significant international developments."

Born, raised, and educated in Edinburgh - "I've absolutely no difficulty in having multiple identities," he replies, when asked if he particularly identifies as Scottish or British - he had been interested in the diplomatic service "from quite an early age".
