Von der Leyen vote is gateway for big, new EU agenda

If her candidacy is ratified for a second term, the key priorities for the next Commission include enhancing Europe’s global competitiveness, boosting defence capability, and more controls over migration

URSULA von der Leyen has already received support from national leaders for a second term as European Commission president. However, she faces on Thursday (Jul 18) a potentially knife-edge vote in the European Parliament that could go against her.

Von der Leyen was approved for her first term in 2019 by only nine votes, and Thursday’s ballot could be tight, too. This is despite her generally strong record over the last five years, including her leadership over the Ukraine war, and the fact that she is now a more seasoned leader.

If her candidacy is ratified for a second term by Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), the key priorities for the next Commission from 2024 to 2029 include enhancing Europe’s global competitiveness, boosting defence capability, and more controls over migration.
