Accelerating the transition to renewable energy
THIS year will be a major tipping point for renewable energy as mounting pressure on organisations, companies and society to reduce global CO2 emissions reaches boiling point.
Studies show that while global CO2 emissions remained flat for three years, these discharges started to rise again in 2017, increasing 1.4 per cent. Worse still, the International Energy Agency (IEA) warned that emissions were set to rise to a new record level in 2018. Despite many nations signing up to the 2015 Paris Agreement, commiting to keep temperature rise this century at or below 2 deg C compared to pre-industrial times, the chances of this target being met look very slim. Top climate change scientists believe that we can keep temperature rise well under the 2 deg C limit but warn that the world must act now before the damage becomes irreversible.
Climate change is no longer the scenario of futuristic sci-fi movies. It's today's reality, and its impact is catastrophic.
