HERE is an item that even President Joe Biden's harshest critics and former president Donald Trump's biggest fans didn't expect to see in the news media before the end of the new leader's first year in office: Mr Biden and Mr Trump are statistically tied when it comes to their favourability among US voters, according to a new Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll survey released last week.

Forty-eight per cent of respondents say they have a positive view of Mr Trump compared to 46 per cent who say they have a favourable opinion of his successor. At the same time, 49 per cent of those surveyed said they have an unfavourable view of the current president, while slightly less, 47 per cent, report an unfavourable opinion of the former president.

And while 51 per cent of respondents now say Mr Trump was a better president than Mr Biden, only 49 per cent prefer the White House's current occupant, the poll shows.
