IT IS fair to say that we have probably too frequently used the term "historic" in reference to political events that may not be so significant or consequential in the big picture of history.

But very few serious historians (or anyone else for that matter) would deny that the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty signed at the White House on March 26, 1979, was a historic event that could be compared to the fall of the Berlin Wall 10 years later, or to the end of South Africa's apartheid regime in the 1990s.
