Modi's worldview a recipe for disaster for modern India
INDIAN Prime Minister Narendra Modi finished a highly visible tour to the United States where he wooed bankers, IT leaders in Silicon Valley and political leaders in Washington. But the enthusiasm for his charisma and policies quickly faded as political developments at home began to take their toll.
A man was lynched at Dadri, near the national capital, for allegedly eating beef. A legislator in Kashmir was beaten up within the state legislature for throwing a party where beef was served. Some days later a family of dalits, including two infants, was set on fire.
The chief minister of the state near where the lynching took place thundered that "Muslims can live in this country but they will have to give up eating beef". Some BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) governments in states have extended the ban on the consumption of beef to meat of all kinds. Madhya Pradesh, where the BJP is in power, has even banned eggs given to children in the free mid-day meal scheme.
