New security law changes Hong Kong for activists and businesses

Published Wed, Jul 8, 2020 · 09:50 PM

JOSHUA Wong, the secretary-general and founding member of pro-democracy party Demosisto, quickly changed tack in his fight to maintain Hong Kong's freedom when news broke on June 30 that China had passed a new security law.

Mr Wong, 23, immediately announced that he was quitting Demosisto. The party disbanded shortly after that. Nathan Law, another prominent member of Demosisto, also quit and later said he had fled Hong Kong.

"Hong Kong protesters now face high possibilities of being extradited to China's courts for trials and life sentences," Mr Wong said, after quitting.
