AMERICAN presidential candidates are candidly revealing their perceptions and fears about the outside world. They are offering clues about what kind of foreign policy they will adopt, underlining the crucial role that psychology plays in diplomacy.
Their psychological temperament will determine the strategies they will choose in high-stakes negotiations with other countries, such as brinkmanship, deterrence and threat, along with resolve, commitment and trust.
