Trump's no-win situation over Iran

He would find it almost impossible to mobilise a coalition against Teheran; also, a military confrontation could explode into a wider Middle Eastern war that would threaten oil supplies

EARLIER this week Donald Trump branded himself as the War President. Conducting American foreign policy as usual through his stream of tweets, he seemed to be accusing the Islamic Republic of Iran of being behind Saturday's attack on Saudi Arabia's Abqaiq oil processing centre that handles half of the kingdom's production.

"Saudi Arabia oil supply was attacked. There is reason to believe that we know the culprit", and Americans "are locked and loaded depending on verification", the president tweeted on Sunday, adding that Washington was still "waiting to hear from the kingdom as to who they believe was the cause of this attack, and under what terms we would proceed!"

In short, the Trump administration was only waiting to get the green light from the Saudis to attack the Iranians.
