THERE is this country that's a net oil exporter, where according to reports, the security services were considering staging a coup against its president whom they suspected of having ties with a foreign power and who has just declared a national emergency. And then there is the threat of revolution to be launched by a political movement led by a young Latina socialist activist. But no, the country is not Venezuela.

Well, it is true, as President Donald Trump pointed out in his recent State of the Union Address before Congress, that the United States has become a net oil exporter for the first time in 75 years with major economic and strategic implications, especially in dealing with large oil exporters like Venezuela.

It is also true, at least according to Andrew McCabe, the ousted deputy FBI director, who in an interview with CBS News' 60 Minutes programme revealed that in May 2017 he and his colleagues had become so alarmed over reports about alleged ties between President Trump and Russian officials that they discussed whether to invoke the 25th amendment to the US Constitution that allows for the removal of the president from office.
