In the latest episode of Lens on Singapore, the team delves into Singapore’s electoral intricacies and sheds light on recent changes and expectations leading up to GE2025. As host, I was joined by esteemed political science experts, Dr Gillian Koh, senior research fellow, Institute of Policy Studies, National University of Singapore and Professor Walid Jumblatt bin Abdullah, School of Social Sciences, Nanyang Technological University.

One of the primary reasons to listen to this podcast is the depth provided by Dr Koh and Prof Walid who offer their learned perspectives on electoral boundaries, the function of GRCs, and the roles of MPs.

    Understanding Singapore’s electoral system

Demystifying the complexities, the academics break down intricate details about how electoral boundaries are drawn, why they change, and how Singapore’s unique GRC system operates. These insights are crucial for voters who want to make informed decisions in the upcoming GE2025.

The experts discuss the historical development of the electoral system and its contemporary relevance. By doing so, they offer listeners a well-rounded view of how past reforms shape present-day politics.

Dr Koh and Prof Walid provide detailed explanations on campaigning rules, the role of opposition parties, and what to expect in the upcoming elections.

While the academics broadly agreed with each other, the nuances of their differing opinions in explaining various aspects of Singapore’s system from the role of the Opposition to Meet-The-People-Sessions engages as it informs.

    Expectations of our MPs

The discourse extends to Singapore’s formal campaigning period, typically nine days plus a cooling-off day, and how parties are always preparing post-elections. Both Dr Koh and Prof Walid agree that this ongoing preparation is essential for both ruling and opposition parties.

Finally, the podcast delves into the roles of elected Members of Parliament (MPs). Prof Walid outlines their parliamentary duties, differentiating between political office holders and backbenchers.

He emphasises MPs’ roles as estate managers, reflecting voters’ preferences through direct engagement in their constituencies. Dr Koh and Prof Walid discuss the nuanced expectations of MPs, such as attending local events and engaging in informal interactions with residents.
