Putting the onus on boards for performance
Singapore’s stock market revival is gaining traction, but the next phase of growth may depend less on policy and more on people. Specifically, the people sitting in boardrooms.
In this week’s episode of Mark To Market, a BT Correspondents podcast hosted by Ben Paul, senior correspondent at The Business Times, the focus shifts from indices and policy frameworks to accountability and what the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) really expects from directors, and why boardrooms can no longer hide behind “market sentiment.”
MAS deputy chairman Chee Hong Tat’s call for directors to become catalysts for value creation landed with weight. With the iEdge Singapore Next 50 Index and the S$5 billion Equity Market Development Programme already stirring renewed investor interest, his comments effectively put corporate boards on notice: performance is now their mandate.
Why listen?
- Understand why MAS wants directors to take the lead in unlocking shareholder value.
- Learn how the iEdge Singapore Next 50 Index could transform investor attention beyond the blue chips.
- Hear what’s holding some boards back and what might finally change that dynamic.
- Find out why alignment between boards, management and minority shareholders will determine if the rally lasts.
Singapore’s market momentum looks promising. But sustaining it will require courage, competence and a willingness to reform from within. If boards step up, the country’s equity story could enter its most exciting chapter yet. If not, all the policy support in the world won’t move the needle.
