It has been quite a week hasn’t it? Monday opened with oil surging past $100 on fears of an Iranian port blockade and by Thursday the mood had flipped entirely, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq closing at record highs for a second straight day. A temporary ceasefire, diplomatic signals from Washington and easing energy prices did a lot of heavy lifting in a very short space of time. Now the question is whether any of it holds.

In this episode of Market Focus Weekly, a podcast by The Business Times, Howie Lim speaks with Pete Tan, portfolio manager at PhillipCapital, to work through a week that packed more reversals into five days than most months manage. Tan’s read is cautiously optimistic but he is not encouraging anyone to chase the rally.

    Why listen

    • Whether the peace rally is built on something real or just relief Tan explains why he thinks the worst of the oil shock is behind us while flagging exactly what could unravel that view quickly.
    • Why TSMC’s profit surge points to something bigger than a one-week story AI demand is operating on a completely different timeline from oil price anxiety and Tan makes that distinction clearly.
    • China grew but investors are not buying it A 5 per cent Q1 growth number should be good news. Tan explains why investors are looking elsewhere anyway.
    • Which Singapore sectors held up best through the crisis and why Beyond the banks, consumer staples, utilities and telcos all had a moment. Tan walks through what that positioning tells us about where cautious money went.

The rally is real but so are the risks still sitting underneath it. What are they? Listen now.
