CITY Developments Ltd (CDL) on Thursday (Jul 25) opened a new annex at the Singapore Sustainability Academy (SSA) to boost collaboration in climate action and sustainable development.

Spanning 2,690 square feet (sq ft), the new annex will serve as a collaborative and community space for local and global non-government organisation (NGO) partners, with facilities for conferences, said CDL. It will also house the United Nations Global Compact Network Singapore as its anchor NGO partner.

Focus areas for the space include capacity building, education and training, resource sharing, user engagement and fostering sustainability thinking.

“The SSA annex will also help to… build capacity and bring partners together to develop innovative solutions to drive collaborative climate action,” the group said.

With the annex, the entire SSA will now span 6,990 sq ft on the roof terrace of City Square Mall.

Launched in 2017, the SSA was jointly developed by CDL and the NGO Sustainable Energy Association of Singapore. It was Singapore’s first major “3P” – people, public and private – ground-up initiative supporting global and national goals to tackle climate change.

At the annex’s opening ceremony on Thursday, Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat noted that the SSA has “done well” in raising public awareness on sustainability and mobilising collective action so far.

For instance, talks and workshops at the SSA have helped demystify topics such as carbon accounting and reporting, the circular economy and decarbonisation, among others, he said.

The academy has also helped companies and workers build a strong foundation of sustainability knowledge and skills through various talks and training programmes on green buildings, nature conservation and the adoption of sustainable energy, he said.

To date, the SSA has hosted more than 1,000 events and training classes with some 35,000 visitors, highlighted CDL group chief executive officer Sherman Kwek.

It is also the base for two important sustainability networks that CDL established, he said.

“The expanded SSA will continue to encourage the exchange of ideas and magnify positive change for a more sustainable tomorrow,” he added.

“(It also) reflects CDL’s dedication to leveraging partnerships for knowledge and capacity building, driving towards a net-zero future in Singapore and beyond.”
