Old tensions clash with grand ambition in new Indian city Amaravati

AS big plans and intricate models were made for a new city in south India, officials struggled to communicate their vision to thousands of farmers who gave up land for the decades-long, multi-billion dollar project.

So last November, they flew a group of them to Singapore to see the city that the new state capital is modelled after - a modern, high-tech hub with eco-friendly features that also offers economic opportunities.
