TEMASEK-OWNED ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC) is planning to establish a second data centre site in Seoul, South Korea.

In a press statement on Wednesday (Jun 8), the data centre provider said its latest project will be backed by an unnamed global institutional investor as well as Samsung SRA Asset Management, the real estate investment arm of Samsung Group.

Under the partnership, STT GDC and its investors will develop the data centre’s shell and core building, to be leased out by STT GDC. The company will also complete the remaining DC fitouts before operating the data centre, which is expected to be ready for service in H1 of 2025.

The new data centre will comprise 31,205 square metres of gross floor area and deliver a development potential of 30 megawatts of IT power.

It is located within Gasan-dong in the Geumcheon-gu district within Seoul, which STT GDC highlighted as strategically positioned near substations, critical telecommunications, subway stations, as well as logistics and knowledge industry centres.

Bruno Lopez, president and group chief executive of the company, said the expansion in Seoul is a “natural next step” for STT GDC in “offering critical digital infrastructure services to meet the growing customer demand for complex design and scale requirements”.

“With our data centre site set within a strategic yet accessible prime location within the city of Seoul, we believe this will open doors to new opportunities for accelerated digital infrastructure, cloud-based services and innovations,” added Nicholas Toh, chief executive of North-east Asia, STT GDC.

STT GDC in 2021 announced its foray into South Korea through a 60:40 joint venture with Hyosung Heavy Industries, which would see the joint development and operation of STT GDC’s first carrier-neutral data centre campus in the country.

The company currently has over 160 data centre facilities across Singapore, the UK, China, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan and the Philippines.
