Hotels aim to have net-zero emissions by 2050; to start tracking emissions in 2023
HOTELS in Singapore have aimed to start tracking its carbon emissions by next year, and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, as part of targets set out in a sustainability roadmap launched by the Singapore Hotel Association (SHA) and the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) on Monday (Mar 21).
In addition to emission targets, the industry also hopes that 60 per cent of hotel room stock in the city-state will attain internationally recognised sustainability certification by 2025.
To help hotels achieve these goals, the sustainability roadmap laid out 4 strategies they can adopt.
This includes developing sustainable hotel concepts such as farm-to-table dining experiences, rooftop herb gardens and eco-friendly bedding.
Hotels can also promote sustainable habits among hotel guests by replacing water bottles with a filtration tap inside the rooms, providing housekeeping services only upon request and using sustainable hotel toiletries.
Hotels can source for sustainable solution providers through Enterprise Singapore's Sustainability Marketplace to try out and adopt innovative sustainable solutions.

These solution providers have developed products in energy and water management, as well as in plastic and waste management.
Some examples of what these providers have done include:
turning urban spaces into vertical green walls or urban farms
manufacturing eco-friendly and smart bathroom products
establishing a recycling programme with hotels to upcycle used water bottles into new products
converting organic waste into high-quality fertiliser
developing plant-based foodware
Water conservation, waste management, recycling and circular economy, sustainable sourcing and procurement, as well as energy conservation have been identified as the 4 focus areas to green hotel operations in the roadmap.
The plans and goals outlined in the roadmap are in line with Singapore's overall nationwide agenda for sustainable development, otherwise known as the Singapore green plan 2030, as stated in a joint media release by STB and SHA on Monday.
STB and SHA said they hope the roadmap will help realise a hotel industry that uses sustainability to drive business competitiveness and growth, and is recognised as a regional leader in environmental sustainability.
