More green spaces to be added to Keppel Club redevelopment site: Desmond Lee
MORE green spaces will be added along the eastern part of the Keppel Club redevelopment site to provide an alternative connection for birds, said National Development Minister Desmond Lee in a Facebook post on Wednesday (Jul 20).
The idea to add more green spaces had come from the public, who provided feedback after an Environmental Impact Study was conducted at the site and its findings were released, Lee added.
To recognise the site’s history and archaeological potential, the National Heritage Board (NHB), Housing Board (HDB) and Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) will be commissioning an archaeological study to “further our understanding of its role and significance”, said Lee in his Facebook post.
The study will be carried out later this year as archaeologists conduct excavation work to recover and assess any finds before development work commences.
The series of updates come after HDB announced plans to redevelop the Keppel Club site for public housing in April this year. When completed, the area will also welcome a new Labrador Nature Park Network, which will serve to “strengthen the greenery and ecological connectivity of the surrounding area”, Lee said.
The site at Keppel Club was said to be a place where soldiers from the Malay Regiment gathered on the night of Feb 15, 1942, a few hours after the British surrendered to the Japanese during World War II. Researchers believe there could be weapons, ammunition and uniform scraps that could be uncovered through an archaeological dig.

Keppel Club, whose lease ended last month, will have until Mar 31 next year to demolish its clubhouse and reinstate the site.
Said Lee: “The Keppel Club site is part of our longer-term transformation of the Greater Southern Waterfront. We will continue to involve and engage Singaporeans in our development plans for the area, and transform it into a vibrant area for Singaporeans to live, work and enjoy.”
