SMALL and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can receive help to create sustainability road maps and adopt sustainable practices under a new memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed between The Association of Small & Medium Enterprises (ASME) and Temasek Polytechnic.

The strategic partnership aims to advance sustainability efforts among SMEs by raising awareness and fostering sustainable practices, both parties said on Tuesday (Oct 29).

This is in line with Singapore’s national sustainability goals, which includes reducing emissions to around 60 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2030 after peaking emissions earlier, and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

ASME and Temasek Poly will work together to provide opportunities for SMEs to gain knowledge about environmental sustainability, with a key focus on helping ASME’s member companies build their capabilities in sustainable practices.

To do so, both parties will conduct surveys and studies to gain insights into people’s views about sustainable consumer products, on top of the barriers and drivers that influence SMEs in adopting these practices.

In addition, the partnership will see the launch of a business transformation programme to help ASME’s member companies curate and fine-tune their sustainability road maps.

Under the programme, SMEs will have access to tools and guidance. Both ASME and Temasek Poly will also co-organise outreach events and platforms to promote sustainability and the adoption of joint initiatives.

ASME president Ang Yuit noted that while sustainability has become an increasingly important topic of interest, many SMEs face challenges breaking this down into actionable steps.

The partnership with Temasek Poly is thus a step towards helping the association’s members and the wider community of SMEs explore how to make sustainability “both actionable and accessible”, especially for those ready to make the first move.

Tay Boon Keat, director of research, innovation and enterprise and partnership development at Temasek Poly, said the partnership will position Singapore’s SMEs to be at the forefront of environmental responsibility.

“By equipping SMEs with the necessary knowledge, tools, and support, this initiative will empower them to contribute meaningfully to Singapore’s broader sustainability efforts.”
